Death of Keith Fairburn

17/05/17 18:41
It is with great sadness that the Kippax Band announce the death of Keith Fairburn. He died in St. James’ Hospital Leeds after a short illness linked to ongoing health issues. It is especially poignant that Keith had decided not to stand for re-election as Band Secretary this year due to his deteriorating health, and his last formal day in office was the day that he died.

Keith is known throughout the banding community not only for being an exceptional bass trombone player, but his industrious allegiance to a single band for close to six decades. He is survived by his wife Aileen, whose commitment to Kippax Band is equally legendary, and their two sons, Lee and Dean, current and former players respectively.

Band Chairman Colin Moss said, “Kippax Band are devastated by Keith’s death. Our thoughts are with Aileen, Lee, Dean and all the family. Keith’s tireless dedication is woven throughout the very fabric of our institution, and his impact on the band can never be underestimated. We can only honour him by recognising his legacy in all our future successes.”

Kippax Band will announce funeral arrangements in due course,
but in the meantime, ask that you direct any band queries in the first instance to Rob Lovatt, Acting Band Secretary on 07933 540 857, or Colin Moss, Band Chairman at

8th place at Yorkshire regional championships

06/03/17 18:41
The band placed 8th in an 11 band field at the Yorkshire ‘Areas’ on Sunday. Whilst we are disappointed with the result the Band remain committed to building on the foundations we are putting in place and look forward to progressing as a team.

The result didn’t dampen our spirits too much though as we headed back to the Band club and enjoyed a good curry, a few drinks and some all round good banter!

Test piece run-out event a great success.

21/02/17 18:41
The band’s pre-regionals test piece run-out attracted a very healthy audience to the Band Club last Sunday with four local bands giving their respective area test pieces a public airing.

Our thanks go to Tingley, Wetherby & Knottingley and not least to David Lancaster for his appraisal and feedback on all four performances. We hope that each band found the event a useful run-out, and wish everybody a successful day at Huddersfield next week.

2017 club concerts get off to a flying start!

14/02/17 15:57
Last Sunday saw the band kick-off our 2017 season of concerts in the band club.

On such a cold evening it was fantastic to see a great turn-out, with the band playing lots of new music along the way.

As usual, there were plenty of the band ‘on their feet’ with solos from Lee (Nessun Dorma) Nigel (Stars) and a duet from Nicola and Lesley, not to mention a fabulous vocal version of ‘Hallelujah’ from Emma.

We also tried out some new arrangements and compositions, including a couple of rousing openers in the tom of ‘Home of Legends’ and Earth, Wind & Fire’s ‘In the Stone’.

Don’t forget - we’re back in the club next sunday for our test piece run-outs with our friends from Knottingley, Wetherby and Tingley. We start at 4:30 pm and hope to see you there!
